Xmas: FG to repair 180 roads in S’East

The Federal Government through its Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has commenced the repair of about 180 roads across the five states of the South-East to ensure easy flow of traffic in the zone during the Christmas celebrations.

Managing Director of the agency, Mr. Gabriel Amuchi, who inspected the ongoing repairs at the 9th Mile Corner/Obollo-Afor Highway, expressed satisfaction with the pace of work in the area.

Amuchi, who was represented by FERMA Legal Adviser, Stella Anukam, described the inspection tour as a part of the agency’s routine and continuous monitoring of projects.

“The rain has just ended and we are now in the dry season and as we usually do, we go around to see how our projects are faring. We look at our direct labour projects, we also look at our contract projects and that is why we are here.

“We have over 180 projects in the South-East, some are for special requests and some for emergency. We are also handling some few critical roads like where we are coming from now, you can see what we are doing on the 9th Mile -Obollo Afor Road.

“We want to ensure the road is in a good state, free of potholes to ensure that by December when there will be mass movement of people on the roads, travellers can have a smooth movement. So, where you see potholes you see our pothole patchers tackling them.

On the ongoing construction of trailers parks along the 9th-Mile Corner Expressway, Anukam noted that part of the mandate of the agency was to ensure the free flow of traffic on federal roads and “that has necessitated the building of trailer parks so that all those trailers that obstruct the highway are made to park in the designated trailer park.

“So you won’t see trailers park along the road; as soon as we are done with the project, we will work with the stakeholders, NATO, NURTW, the owners of these trailers and tell them to keep off from the highway.”
