Poor QoS costing Nigeria’s mobile subscribers billions

From Lagos, media reports stemming from a one-day Forum, organised by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), say that telecommunications subscribers in the country lose in the region of N730 billion (approximately $4,6 billlion) annually due to poor quality of service.

ATCON is a non-profit, apolitical umbrella body, inaugurated in 1993, to represent telecommunications companies in Nigeria.

Issues such as damage to infrastructure through vandalism, dropped calls and charges to undelivered Short Message Service (SMS) have been raised and suggested as contributing factors towards general inadequate network capacity.

ATCON, along with executives representing the telecommunications industry, have also bemoaned the impact of fake devices on service quality, as well as multi-SIM phone usage defeating the objectives of porting.

The need to maintain focus on broadband as a catalyst for open access and spectrum was also discussed and the Association has reportedly urged the NCC (Nigeria Communications Commission) to engage the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in an effort to address the issues raised.
