The Presidential Amnesty Office has declared that the activities of crude oil thieves and pirates in the Niger Delta region were not in any way indicative of the failure of the amnesty programme.
It stated that while the security agencies in the region are battling the menace, there is so far no established evidence of former militant agitators being involved in the criminal act, adding that “unless one wants to play the ostrich and feign ignorance, it is a known fact that crude oil theft in the Niger Delta is masterminded by international syndicates, which are now being seriously confronted by the Nigerian government in collaboration with friendly countries.”
Head, Media & Communications, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr. Dan Alabrah, in a statement issued Thursday, said “the Presidential Amnesty Office was not surprised about the verbal attack on the amnesty programme by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed.”
Mohammed was reported to have in a television programme on Wednesday, described the amnesty programme as a waste of national resources and time, and that it had not curbed militancy in the Niger Delta.
